Five for Friday and Giveaway!

This short week has sure felt like a long one! Back in school means another sinus infection for me, yikes! I spent 3 months straight with them last year.. hoping this one goes away quickly! I'm linking up with the amazing Doodle Bugs for Five for Friday to share about my week :)

Hubs and I spent labor day up on Lake Erie with my parents on their boat. It was a nice relaxing day full of sun and water.. loved it :)

We have been working all week in our Interactive Notebooks from Lovin' Lit and let me tell you, my kiddos LOVE them. Like seriously, there are cries of joy when I tell them to get their composition book and scissors out.. joy, people! :)

This week we started with the story vocabulary and character traits lessons. We use this interactive story elements version of Cinderella to introduce the concepts and then watched the British accent of Little Red Riding Hood that Erin suggested (another reason I LOVE her product, there are SO many great ideas for teaching with it.)

After that, we used her Bonus inferring lesson to learn the difference between explicit answers in text, and inferences. We did the practice passage with the puzzle pieces and the video clips of Toy Story and Finding Nemo. My kiddos LOVED these! Then we read a book together and made our own inferring puzzle piece.

Here's the book we used:

If you haven't read this before, you HAVE to. It is such an amazing, calming, and beautiful book about a boy named Nicky who is stuck at his grandmother's house on the river for the summer. He ends up finding it isn't as bad as he thought and it is a beautiful tale. We wrote down a quote from the book and practiced inferring based on our prior knowledge + the evidence. They did a great job! I have always thought inferring was one of the hardest concepts for 4th graders so I start it early and we revisit and review all year long.

We are finally up and running with FULL Daily 5 stations! I blogged about how these work in my classroom yesterday, so check out that post for more info! And if you want to pick up my Smartboard rotations board, click here to download for free!

I am LOVING our dry erase student answer circles. We did some grammar review with them today and the kiddos LOVED using them! :)

We had a great time reading with our Kindergarten buddies today. This is one of my favorite parts of the week because it makes my heart happy to see how well my fourthies work with their buddies!

Today was jean day! I am a better teacher in jeans! :) But seriously, I'm more comfy, especially when I'm sick! And more willing to move and be on the floor and all that jazz. My amazing teaching partner had GLITTER spirit sweatshirts made for us. Aren't they AWESOME!?

I even took time out of my busy schedule this week to get my nails done. MWF right now I go to school then straight to volleyball practice until 7pm. Tuesdays and Thursdays I go straight to games until anywhere from 9pm-11pm, and Saturdays we have games... needless to say, I need some ME time. I love this new fall Shellac color called "Rubble"

Also, don't forget about Diane and I's amazing giveaway!!! Only 1 more day left to enter!!!! :) Click here to enter :)

  3. What a great post! I'm loving all of your ideas and pictures from your interactive notebooks! We are slowly but surely getting going on ours! I've always said I would be a better teacher if I could wear jeans and tennis shoes every day - it just makes me feel energized (silly I know!!). Hope you feel better!!

  6. Wow! Your blog is incredible! I am going to download the Smart Notebook file that you use for Daily 5. I do not use Daily 5 but I can modify it for my reading groups. And you're in Ohio? I applied in Wadsworth this year but didn't hear anything sadly. A friend of mine used to work at Wadsworth High. I currently teach third grade in Warrensville Heights and last year I taught fourth grade!
